Another account is that it comes from the words "not us", such as when the trail settlers came to this area and were asked if they were going to continue on to oregon, they simply stated "Not Us!".

On the town's website, they put the words "city of the south wind", referencing the greek word Notus, which is the "personification of the south wind".
